Authorities in Utah provided an update on a manhunt for the gunman who fatally shot Charlie Kirk during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University, as state and federal agencies co-lead the investigation into what officials believe was a targeted attack.
The Utah Department of Public Safety said in a press release that Kirk was speaking at the event at about 12:20 p.m. local time when he was shot.
“We initially took in George Zinn as a suspect. He was later released and charged with obstruction by UVU police,” the department said. “A second suspect, Zachariah Qureshi, was taken into custody and released after interrogation with law enforcement. There are no current ties to the shooting with either of these individuals. There is an ongoing investigation and manhunt for the shooter.”

Investigators believe the attack was targeted and the shooter is believed to have fired a round from the roof of a building.
The event took place in a student courtyard, which was secured with the help of six Utah Valley University officers.
DPS said the security measures from the university were in addition to Kirk’s security detail.
DPS also said about 3,000 people attended the event.
“This is a tragic moment for Utah and our country,” DPS said. “As we all heal, we encourage those who need help to call 988, our state’s mental health crisis line.”
Co-leading the investigation with the Utah Department of Public Safety are the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), as well as the Utah County Attorney’s Office, Utah County Sheriff’s Office and local police departments.
The FBI asks anyone with information about the shooting to reach out using a tip line, which can be found at www.fbi.gov/utahvalleyshooting.

In a statement, the foundation said: “The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute is saddened to hear of events that took place today at Utah Valley University. Our prayers are with Charlie Kirk’s family and friends. As a mark of respect, we are cancelling our program and book signing with Ben Shapiro this evening. A new date will be announced shortly.”

The FBI said it has deployed full resources and will co-lead the investigation into the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, urging the public to share information, photos and video through its digital media tip line.

To be clear, the FBI will fully support and co-lead this investigation alongside our partners.”

Student petition had criticized UVU for hosting Charlie Kirk, citing ‘divisive rhetoric’
Charlie Kirk’s visit to Utah Valley University on his “American Comeback” tour sparked fierce backlash online.
A Change.org petition, “Prevent Charlie Kirk from speaking at Utah Valley University,” racked up nearly 1,000 signatures ahead of the event.
The petition took aim at UVU’s own branding. “Utah Valley University’s tagline is ‘a place for you,’” it declared. “How then, can the university claim to represent inclusion and diversity by allowing an influencer like Charlie Kirk to have a platform?”
Supporters accused Kirk of undermining the campus environment. “As students at Utah Valley University, we have come to cherish an environment that strives for inclusivity and diversity. Yet, the planned speaking engagement of Charlie Kirk threatens this ideal,” the petition said.
Critics argued that hosting Kirk sent the wrong message: “Giving a platform to someone whose views are in direct opposition to these principles undermines UVU’s commitment to being ‘a place for you.’”
The petition has 943 signatures and has since been closed.

She closed with a warning: “If you’re alive and breathing in the United States right now, you understand that the risks have simply escalated. And the United States Congress could act and so far simply refuses.”

UVU police chief admits ‘we didn’t cover the bases’ after Charlie Kirk shooting: report
Utah Valley University’s own police chief acknowledged his department failed to fully secure the campus before conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during a speech in Orem on Wednesday.
Six UVU officers were assigned to the event, along with Kirk’s personal security team and plainclothes officers in the crowd, according to reporting from FOX13.
“You try to get your bases covered and, unfortunately, today we didn’t,” Chief Jeff Long admitted in a briefing. “And because of that, we had this tragic incident.”
The packed crowd of more than 3,000 students and community members scattered in panic after Kirk was reportedly shot from afar.
Utah Valley University president says school says violence ‘has no place here’
Utah Valley University President Astrid Tuminez offered her condolences to the Kirk family and those who witnessed the shooting in a statement sent to Fox News Digital, noting the university is a place to debate “openly and respectfully.”
“On behalf of Utah Valley University, we are shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of Charlie Kirk,” Tuminez wrote in the statement. “We express our sincere condolences to the Kirk family. We grieve with our students, faculty, and staff who bore witness to this unspeakable tragedy.”
She noted Kirk was invited by a Turning Point USA student group to speak on campus, and expressed the school’s commitment to the sharing of ideas without violence.
“We firmly believe that UVU is a place to share ideas and to debate openly and respectfully. Any attempt to infringe on those rights has no place here,” Tuminez wrote. “We do not condone any form of violence at UVU and seek to make our campus a safe place for all.”

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., condemned the shooting as “awful.”
“There’s no room for political violence in our country…we can’t normalize political violence,” he said.
Another lawmaker who weighed in was Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis., who blamed the media and Democrats for fueling political violence.
“This didn’t have to happen,” he said. “But it happened because of the violent political rhetoric coming out of the left being amplified by you people in the press. You are partially responsible for this.”

Business leaders across industries expressed dismay and grief after the fatal shooting of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

The advocacy group connected to deceased billionaire philanthropist Foster Friess, who was an early funder and supporter of Turning Point USA, shared several pictures of Kirk on X.

Breaking News’Subject’ questioned and released after Utah campus shooting, Patel says
FBI Director Kash Patel announced the subject detained in the Charlie Kirk assassination investigation has been released after an interrogation by law enforcement.
“Our investigation continues and we will continue to release information in interest of transparency,” Patel wrote in an X statement.
Campus police initially said they had, and then released, a suspect from custody.
Patel later firmly announced via X the FBI had “the subject for the horrific shooting today that took the life of Charlie Kirk” in custody.
It is unclear if any additional suspects have been identified, and if the manhunt was ongoing during the former subject’s questioning.
The FBI told Fox News Digital “we refer you to the Director’s post and have nothing additional to provide.”
It is also unknown if there is a current threat to public safety.
The White House did not immediately respond to an inquiry from Fox News Digital.

Yankees hold moment of silence in honor of Charlie Kirk after shooting death in Utah

“This is a dark day for our state. It’s a tragic day for our nation. I want to be very clear that this is a political assassination,” he said during a press conference. “We are celebrating 250 years of the founding of this great nation. That founding document, the Declaration of Independence, that this great experiment on which we embarked together 250 years ago, that we are endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights.
“The first one of those is life, and today a life was taken,” Cox continued. “Charlie Kirk
was first and foremost a husband and a dad to young children. He was also very much politically involved and that’s why he was here on campus. Charlie believed in the power of free speech and debate to shape ideas and to persuade people.”

Cox confirmed that a person of interest is in custody and that the investigation is ongoing.
But he wanted to make “crystal clear” that whoever did this will be found.

Charlie Kirk rose to prominence after he dropped out of college to pursue political activism and founded Turning Point USA (TPUSA) to serve as an organization that promotes conservative youth activism at high school and college campuses.

Fox News Digital’s Peter D’Abrosca reported seeing three people in tears while boarding his flight to Salt Lake City, Utah over the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.
Another woman was watching Fox News in her seat, leaned back in horror, D’Abrosca said.
A Fox News reporter at Charlotte Douglas International Airport also witnessed travelers crying as news of Kirk’s assassination became public.

Leaders from across Europe are offering their condolences and support for the Kirk family after Charlie Kirk died Wednesday in the wake of a shooting during a speaking engagement in Utah.
“He has been killed for saying things that used to be simple common sense,” wrote former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in an X post. “He has been killed because he had the courage to stand up publicly for reasonable opinions held by millions and millions of ordinary people both in the US and Britain. The world has a shining new martyr to free speech.”
Leader of Reform UK Nigel Farage also weighed in, writing “This is a very dark day for American democracy. I am desperately sad for Charlie, his wife and children.”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni added she was “shocked” by the tragedy. “I am shocked by the news of the killing of Charlie Kirk, a young and followed Republican activist,” wrote Meloni in a translated X post.
“An atrocious murder, a deep wound for democracy and for those who believe in freedom. My condolences to his family, to his loved ones, and to the American conservative community,” Meloni concluded.
Finally, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his condolences:
“My thoughts this evening are with the loved ones of Charlie Kirk. It is heartbreaking that a young family has been robbed of a father and a husband. We must all be free to debate openly and freely without fear – there can be no justification for political violence.”

Utah Valley University confirms suspect initially in custody released, FBI investigating
A Utah Valley University (UVU) spokesperson told Fox News Digital the suspect that was initially in custody has since been released.
UVU Police are currently investigating in conjunction with the Orem Police Department, Utah Department of Public Safety and the FBI, according to the spokesperson.
“It is with the tremendous sadness and shock that Charlie Kirk, who was invited by the student group TPUSA, was shot at about 12:20 when he began speaking at his planned event on the Utah Valley University Orem Campus,” the school wrote in a statement. “We are asking those still on campus to secure in place until police officers can safely escort them off campus.”
The campus was immediately evacuated and remains closed until further notice. Classes have been cancelled.
