Newton Abbot Racecourse’s meeting on Tuesday afternoon became a family affair, with jockey brother Sean and James Bowen both riding winners, and their brother Mickey Bowen saddling a winner on the day.

The afternoon’s first race, a juvenile hurdle (1.58) saw the first Bowen brother ride to victory. The favourite, Lord, trained by Olly Murphy and ridden by stable jockey Sean Bowen, raced in the mid-field before being sent into the lead over the last two obstacles and winning comfortably by eight lengths, despite an untidy jump at the last.

In the next race, a novices’ hurdle (2.28), the Fergal O’Brien-trained Jack Hyde was the hot favourite at 1/7, ridden by Tom Broughton, returning from a break for the new season. The gelding made all under his five-pound claiming rider, and was full of running coming into the closing stages. He went across the line over four lengths ahead of the next home, which was Jaminska at 11/2, followed by Nana Noodleman at 17/2.

Race three was a conditional jockeys’ handicap chase (2.58). Evan Williams’ Imperial Measure was the favourite here at 11/8, but he wasn’t able to close on the leading pair of top-weight Just A Memory and La Quarite. In a close finish, Just A Memory was the winner by a neck to La Quarite, while the rallying Imperial Measure was third, followed home by Master Mikey Dee.

The fourth race was a three and a quarter mile handicap hurdle (3.28). The Sean Bowen-ridden Jack’s Jury was the favourite at 9/4, but he needed plenty of riding home behind the duelling Hostile Hotelier and Faded Fantasy. Hostile Hotelier jumped well to nudge himself into the lead under Sean Quinlan, so he won by over a length to Faded Fantasy, while Jack’s Jury was running on impressively, although it was in vain on this occasion.

Following was a handicap hurdle run over two miles and a furlong (3.58). We had joint favourites here; Hope Rising for Jamie Snowden, and It’s All About You for Jennie Candlish, both at 7/4. The latter weakened before the second last flight and, while Hope Rising was going well towards the line, he was no match for 6/1 shot Inside Man, who made it look easy as he accelerated into the lead for Jane Williams, winning by nearly three lengths under Ciaran Gethings.

Our second last race was an extended two-mile handicap chase (4.30). Juggernaut was the hot favourite at 10/11, ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies for Anthony Honeyball in the four-runner race. Robbie Llewellyn’s Jaitroplaclasse, however, was the one making all and wasn’t for passing, despite the favourite’s best efforts. The Charlie Price-ridden gelding won by four lengths, with Juggernaut coming second, followed by 4/1 Papa Barns and 10/1 Barranco.

A bumper concluded proceedings (5.00). Favourites were back in business here, with Mickey Bowen’s Axel Bleue the 8/15 favourite, which was unsurprising given the gelding’s excellent point-to-point and bumper background; the son of Axxos was already a winner in both spheres. Ridden by the trainer’s brother, James Bowen, the gelding made all and was able to win comfortably by over two lengths, giving each of the Bowen boys a winner on the day.
