Scotrail has apologised after commuters were left concerned for their safety on a packed train.

Those travelling on the service, which left Cowdenbeath for Edinburgh at 7.56am on Thursday morning, were left fuming after the carriage ended up being “full by the time it reached Dunfermline”.

A concerned passenger told Edinburgh Live he wonders “how long it will be until someone is seriously injured”.

An image shared with our sister title, which was taken on board the service, shows passengers filling up the aisle.

There were only two carriages provided for the busy morning commuter service and Scotrail have since apologised to any customer who ‘experienced overcrowding on their journey’.

Grant Wheelwright, who sent us an image of a packed carriage this morning, told us: “This was the 7.56am train from Cowdenbeath to Edinburgh this morning, that was full by Dunfermline City and only two carriages.

“When is this going to end? If a complaint is made to ScotRail they just fob it off with a weak excuse.

“How long will it be before someone is seriously injured with this joke of a service. I find it hilarious that they do a way with peak fares to get more people to board the train, but in reality most of the time they do not put on enough carriages for said extra people to get on.

“Coming home at night from Edinburgh Gateway is usually two carriages too, nightmare. Really bad.”

Scotrail have said that, due to a shortage of available Class 170 trains, there were two services (7am Perth to Edinburgh, and 7.56am Cowdenbeath to Edinburgh) that were short on carriages.

Both of these services usually run with four carriages.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail Customer Operations Director, said: “We know that one of the biggest concerns for our customers is busy trains, and we are sorry to any customer who experienced overcrowding on their journey.”
