Hollyoaks star Ellis Hollins has teased a “monumental” clash between Tom Cunningham and Clare Devine in upcoming episodes of the series.
The actor, who returned to the Channel 4 soap this year after bowing out last September, has opened up about Tom’s new storyline, as the character is set to get out of prison in next week’s episodes.
Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy at the National Television Awards (NTAs), Hollins said: “It’s been really fun to play a different side to Tom, because his personality is very nice and very unassuming, which is a juxtaposition of him being in prison”.

“It’s quite a contrast to the normal situations he’s been in! So it’s been nice to play quite a different character and be quite serious. But I can’t wait to get out and go back to my old ways!” he added.
Talking about Tom and Clare’s next meeting, Hollins said “it will be one for the times”.

“It’s going to be a monumental clash. Obviously the history they have together, the magnitude of the relationship we have together. It will be very interesting when we finally meet, if we finally do, and are maybe able to put things to bed,” he shared, adding that Gemma Bissex’s character is “completely evil”.
Tom and Clare have a long history together in Hollyoaks. Clare terrorised Tom when he was a child, locking him up, faking his death and trying to murder his brother Max in an attempt to steal their fortune.
Clare, who was presumed dead for years, has now returned to the village, and a clash with Tom is imminent. The two characters haven’t yet shared the screen since July, but the autumn trailer shows they run into each other after Tom’s release from prison.

In next week’s episodes, fans will also get to see Tom reuniting again with Peri Lomax, the mother of his child and his first love, after she visited him at the prison.
“I can’t say too much, but all I’m saying is I used to love working with Ruby [O’Donnell], and the chemistry that Tom and Peri have is undeniable,” Hollins told Digital Spy this week.
“No matter what situations we’ve all been in since then, since we had a baby together, I think the passion and the feelings for each other have always been there. So I’m excited to see how Tom and Peri explore anything between them in the future.”
Hollyoaks airs on Mondays-Wednesdays with its Channel 4 streaming premiere at 7am, then an E4 broadcast the same night at 7pm. Full episodes are also released on YouTube a week after their Channel 4 release.
Selected omnibus episodes are available via Prime Video.
