Sheffield United are expected to part company with Ruben Selles later today, with former manager Chris Wilder being lined up as his replacement.
The Yorkshire club sit bottom of the Championship after five straight defeats, the latest a heavy 5-0 defeat at Ipswich Town on Friday.
Representatives of the COH Sports ownership group, who bought the club shortly before Christmas last year, were at Portman Road to witness the defeat. The decision to dismiss Selles came over the weekend.
Wilder was sacked by the U.S. owners during the summer, just weeks after United had been beaten in the play-offs final by Sunderland. The 57-year-old coming back would mean a third spell as manager of a club he served twice as a player and also supported as a boy.
Friday’s 5-0 loss to Ipswich continued United’s run of straight defeats this season.
Selles, 42, was appointed head coach on a three-year contract after the departure of Wilder at the end of last season. Since then, the Yorkshire club have conceded 14 goals and only scored two across all competitions.
Sheffield United finished third in the Championship last season, after their relegation from the Premier League in 2024. They led 1-0 in the play-off final against Sunderland under Wilder, but ultimately lost 2-1 after a stoppage-time winner from Tom Watson.
Selles joined Hull City in the latter half of 2024-25, winning in his first match to end a run of 13 games without a win. He eventually guided the side to survival on the final day of the campaign with a draw against Portsmouth.
Before then, the Spaniard spent a year-and-a-half with Reading, leaving the side in sixth in League One after a 17th-place finish in 2023-24.
