Today (September 14), seven roads in the town centre will be closed to vehicular traffic, and several bus routes will be operating on diversion.

September 15 marks the 85th anniversary of Battle of Britain Day – a day dedicated to honouring the sacrifice of the Royal Air Force during the battle, which lasted from July 10 until October 31, 1940.

High Street, Market Place, New Street, Priory Street, Ednam Road, Court Passage and Stone Street will be closed to vehicular traffic today to allow for a parade to make its way through the town, which will begin at 10.25am.

The Royal Air Force Association Dudley Branch has organised the special parade, with a wreath-laying service in the town centre.

Every year, the borough pays its respects to the people who lost their lives in the World War II battle of the skies, as well as armed forces personnel serving today.

Royal Air Force cadet squadrons from across the region will join with civic dignitaries for the service.

The parade will step off from the Market Place, followed by the service and wreath laying at the cenotaph on Coronation Gardens.

The service will be led by Padre Father Adam Hadley and include a two-minute silence.

Through the day, all traffic will be diverted via Wolverhampton Street, The Parade, The Broadway and vice versa, as well as Union Street, New Mill Street, Flood Street, Duncan Edwards Way, Castlegate Island, Tipton Road, Birmingham New Road, Priory Road and vice versa.

Transport for West Midlands has also warned of disruption to bus services around the town until 3pm today.

The numbers 1, 2, 2a, 6, 7, X8, 8, 9, 11a, 11, 12, 14a, 17, 18, 19, 25, 27, 74, 81, 82, 126, 226a and 229 will all be operating on diversion.

Three temporary bus stops will be used in addition to the stops in Tower Street, with more information being available on the TfWM website

The Deputy Mayor of Dudley will be in attendance at the memorial service today.

Cllr Mushtaq Hussain said: “This gathering serves as an important reminder of the bravery and sacrifice made by people who gave so much for our country.

“I am sure people from across the borough will join us in commemorating the Battle of Britain, and I am honoured to be attending the event in Dudley.”
