Several locations in northwest Wales have been used as filming sites for the popular HBO series House of the Dragon. Some were used in summer 2023, but it was confirmed in June this year that others were earmarked for season three of the epic fantasy series.
During the summer, three large sets were taking shape at Dinorwig Quarry near Llanberis, which in season two served as a backdrop for the series’ Harrenhal Castle – the largest fortification in Westeros. North Wales Live reported that props were being assembled to suggest the aftermath of a visit by a fire-breathing dragon to the Harrenhal battle camp in the Riverlands.
Natural Resources Wales (NRW) also hinted of more filming at Traeth Llanddwyn and Newborough Forest in southwest Anglesey, where some trees were being felled. And according to a source close to the production team, film crews were also expected to return to Penmon in south west Anglesey.
Other filming locations are in Eryri, including Cwm Idwal and its iconic lake in the Ogwen Valley in Gwynedd. Two sites near Capel Curig in Conwy were also scouted, and the seventh site in Nant Peris at the foot of Yr Wyddfa was reportedly used as the production team’s base.
