The Grove-based team is looking to demolish the current wind tunnel, used for analysis of the aerodynamics of their high-performance cars.

And in its place they will look to build a new research and development building, an associated plant and machinery infrastructure.

The team are fifth in the F1 championship with 86 points and are considered the ‘best of the rest’, below Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren.

Williams have have made significant progress from the 2024 season when they finished ninth with 17 points.

In Grove, Williams employs around 900 ‘highly productive’ people and has more than 400 suppliers within a 30-mile radius of their home town.

The proposed new facility would be used for the testing and development of key components for Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon’s cars.

“The campus provides extensive facilities to support an established engineering business,” a planning statement from Williams said.

“However, modern, fit-for-purpose accommodation is now required to facilitate a new era of growth, enabling Williams to compete at the highest level, and attract and retain the brightest and best talent.

“This application seeks full planning permission for the demolition of a redundant testing facility and the construction of a new testing and development building with associated ancillary infrastructure.”

Planners for Williams have said the new building would be constructed from “robust, low-maintenance” materials with high weathering performance, which would ensure a long-lasting and context-appropriate appearance.

Williams added: “The proposals have been designed with consideration and incorporated mitigation measures to minimise the potential effects of the proposed development on the landscape and visual resources.

“This includes the proposals designed to fit into the footprint of the existing built development, to complement the Williams F1 campus and the local landscape.

“The building has been proposed to be of a comparable scale and massing to those existing buildings on the campus.”

Williams added: “The proposals form a key part of Williams’ strategic masterplan to meet the needs of the expanding F1 team.

“The proposed development represents a vital opportunity for Williams to secure a state-of-the-art facility needed to succeed in the incredibly competitive world of Formula 1 whilst continuing to inspire and train the next generation.”

Earlier year, Williams also put forward plans for a new factory, technology and testing facilities, new office accommodation and new staff facilities in Grove.

If approved, these additional plans would generate around 300 new jobs for the team, documents submitted to the council say.

Proposals have been submitted to Vale of White Horse District Council in a planning application, which can be viewed under the reference P25/V1909/FUL.
