There can be few more bitter pills to swallow for a trainer than losing your Classic hope in the week of the race.
Add in the fact that you’re a young trainer eager to make a statement, you’ve set your sights on the race all year and you were quietly confident about your chance, and it becomes even worse.
However, despite the inevitable frustration Charlie Johnston feels at the setback that denied Lazy Griff a third shot at Classic glory in last Saturday’s St Leger, he has at least seen a lot more of this game than most trainers of his age and is therefore well versed in the trials and tribulations of training racehorses.
