Marseille played Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The league phase of UEFA’s glamour competition got underway and the 15-time European champions secured a 2-1 win over the French side.

Ex-Celtic star Matt O’Riley played for Marseille in midfield at the Bernabeu, having joined the club on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.

O’Riley held his own up against the likes of Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni, with WhoScored delivering a match rating of 6.85 for the Dane.

However, it was another former Celtic player who grabbed the most headlines for Marseille.

Who remembers former Celtic loanee Timothy Weah, signed by Brendan Rodgers during his first spell at Parkhead in 2019?

Weah was the man on the scoresheet for Marseille as they took the lead inside 22 minutes, before a Kylian Mbappe double rescued three points for Madrid.

Weah was played in on goal by Mason Greenwood before dispatching a shot past Thibaut Courtouis, sparking gleeful celebrations.

With that goal, Weah made history as he became the first American to score a goal at the Bernabeu in the Champions League.

Speaking to CBS after the result, Weah said: “Obviously to score at the Bernabeu is a big achievement personally, but to not get the win for the team is disappointing.

“Yeah, I think obviously I’m happy to score my first goal for the club, I think the fans deserved it. But when you leave here without a win, it’s kind of bittersweet. So I would have preferred to win the game.

“Yeah, it’s a pleasure. I mean, it’s a dream come true. I think as a kid, you dream of moments like that and there’s no better club to do it with.

“I’m so happy to be here at Marseille and, you know, I just wanted to give the fans something to cheer about. So, you know, I’m super happy and the job doesn’t stop here.

“I put this game behind me and now it’s onto the next.”

How did Weah fare as a Celtic player?

Weah was only playing for Celtic for a short time between January and May 2019, with Brendan Rodgers leaving shortly after he signed.

He was just 19 at the time but appeared 17 times for the Hoops, scoring four goals and delivering one assist.

His debut came in the Scottish Cup against Airdrieonians and he netted as a substitute, with Celtic winning 3-0 on the day.

Weah helped Celtic win the Scottish Premiership title, but his loan was terminated before he could feature in the Scottish Cup final against Hearts.
