The opening date for the refurbishment of the basement at Abbeydale Picture House in Sheffield has been announced – five months after it was initially aimed to open.

True North Brew Co, a Sheffield-based company which runs a series of pubs and venues across the city, acquired the Abbeydale Picture House in January this year. The brewery planned to transform the building into a “premier entertainment venue”, and now we know when the first stage will open.

Abbeydale Ballroom, located beneath Abbeydale Picture House and replacing the Picture House Social, will open on October 2. True North initially said the basement would reopen in May after a refurbishment.

The brewery said Abbeydale Ballroom will “set the tone” for the remaining restoration of the building. It said the “striking new name nods to the building’s glamorous past while setting the stage for its vibrant future”. The basement area will include the former ballroom, which was the Shuffle Shack, the central room with a small cinema space, bar, diner and terrace.

There will be pool tables, a pizza slice bar, serving late-night bites, and dart boards in the space. Large screens with show live sport, while the venue has a licence until 3am at the weekends with live DJ sets planned.

Kane Yeardly, owner of True North Brew Co., said: “Abbeydale Ballroom is about creating a place where people can come together: to play, to eat, to drink, to celebrate. From the first pint poured to the last ball sunk on the pool table, we want it to feel like Sheffield through and through: independent, inclusive, and full of character. Most importantly, it’s about having something for everyone, no matter what your vibe.”
