A Bedminster takeaway venue has announced its closure with a message written on its door. The SunRa Kitchen opened its doors in 2023 but is now listed as ‘temporarily closed’ on Google.
And, on its brightly painted front door, a message reads: “Well good folks, the ones that know… passing [the] baton of SunRa to [the] next cowboy, may we wish him luck… Thanks for the fish and all that.”
Known for serving up dishes including chicken schnitzel, chicken katsu, falafel and fresh salads and pickles, SunRa was a tiny venue painted bright yellow, with room for just two stools at the window counter and a kitchen in which food was freshly made each day. It was run by former taxi driver Dominic Eastland, who had worked at Edna’s Kitchen at Castle Park – another falafel place at the time.
At time of opening in 2023, Dominic was running SunRa singlehandedly and said that business was ‘unpredictable’, with some days being a lot busier than others. Over the years, many a customer has dubbed the food here some of the best vegan food in the city, with SunRa’s Middle Eastern wraps, pittas, salad boxes, loaded fries and sweet treats getting a shoutout from diners.
Dom has been referred to in social media comments as being a ‘legend’ and serving up some of the ‘freshest’ and ‘best looking’ food around. And it is not yet known if a new owner will continue the SunRa business, or rebrand and transform the space into something new. When BristolLive visited on September 22, the food spot was closed up.

This won’t be the first time this tiny unit in Bedminster closes and reopens. Looking back at the history of the venue, it was formerly Hyde Burger in 2021, Brunchies in 2020, a coffee shop called #FOOD in 2018, a Punjabi takeaway in 2017 and The Breakfast Box prior to that – notably a front for an organised gang of drug dealers.
The BBC reported back in November 2016 how 18 gang members had been jailed after using the cafe to serve up bacon and eggs alongside kilos of cocaine, supplying drugs with a street value of more than £350k at the time. The report created a meme which went viral, showing a man with a thick West Country accent stood by the window of the venue and telling journalists “I never knew that”.
