Pendragon, as short as 4-1 favourite for the Cesarewitch, is an unlikely runner in Newmarket’s prestigious handicap on October 11, with connections instead eyeing an international campaign in the new year.
Trained by Sir Mark Prescott, Pendragon has gone on a meteoric rise through the ratings this season, climbing from a BHA handicap mark of 69 to 109 in five runs.
His latest second in the Doncaster Cup earned him a 12lb hike but he would be eligible to run off his previous handicap mark of 97 if he lined up for the Godolphin-backed Cesarewitch. However, the likelihood of soft ground at Newmarket means he is more likely to be saved for a trip to the Middle East in February.
