An early update on Manchester United’s transfer search for a midfielder heading into 2026.

Manchester United’s summer business was focused on attack, plus a deadline day deal for a goalkeeper. It was lacking much-needed move for a midfielder.

United expressed interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, but the Seagulls were unwilling to discuss a sale, even in the region of £100 million.

Interest in Baleba has not gone away, despite Carlos Baleba’s woeful form for Brighton this season.

Carlos Baleba is only 21, and Manchester United are excited about his potential. The club’s interest in the Cameroon international dates back to his time at Lille.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey reports that Manchester United’s interest in Baleba continues, despite the midfielder’s poor form this season.

Bailey tells United In Focus: “United are already well advanced with their planning for 2026 and midfield is the priority.

“We can’t rule out more than one incoming given Casemiro’s likely exit and also the fact that the futures of Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes are far from certain.

“United have done work on this area and Baleba is the man who they really think is ideal.

“They are fans of the likes of Adam Wharton, Conor Gallagher, Morten Hjulmand – let’s not rule out them bringing in two.

“Baleba has endured a tough start, but with an injury and links to United – there is little concern that he remains the best option in the long-term.”

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has admitted that Manchester United’s interest in Baleba has had an unhelpful impact on the midfielder.

Baleba was hooked at half-time in Brighton’s draw against Tottenham, and he also failed to shine even in their Carabao Cup win against Barnsley this week.

Data from Sofascore highlights how Baleba is averaging just 46 minutes per game this season, despite starting five of seven matches in all competitions.

His form is not befitting of a £100 million midfielder. Manchester United are convinced about him, but if his struggles continue, it will be interesting to see if the stance changes.
