It’s taking up residence at St. Pancras Campus in Camden
London is one of the best museum cities on the planet and it’s only getting better as the world’s first museum dedicated to youth culture is coming to the capital this December. Opening in Camden (a new Museum of Brutalist Architecture is also opening in the borough), the museum will collect, preserve and celebrate the stories of teenage life in Britain over the last century, covering subcultures, fashion, activism, and music. The Museum’s exhibition on emo music at the Barbican Music Library went down a storm last year so we’re excited to see what they do with a permanent space.
The 6500 sq ft site will be home to three gallery spaces, two of which will be rolling, showcasing various pieces from the permanent collection and archive, and one dedicated free gallery where young creatives can exhibit their work. Expect to see everything from band tees and rave flyers to school leavers shirts and shoebox photos from post-war bike racers, punks, acid house ravers and more.
There’ll also be exhibitions and pop-ups curated in partnership with Fred Perry; hands-on music production workshops; a cafe and record store; and a programme of talks and events to get involved in. And London is just the start, with venues planned to open in Birmingham and Glasgow over the next four years.
Speaking about the opening, founder of the Museum of Youth Culture Jon Swinstead said: “This is more than a place to look back, it’s a space to participate, contribute, and shape the cultural narrative together. Camden has been synonymous with music and youth culture for decades, making it the natural home for the Museum. We’re creating a space for stories that have often been overlooked but are essential to understanding who we are. Youth culture drives innovation, challenges norms, and creates communities – it’s one of the most powerful forces in society. That’s why it matters. And that’s why we want everyone to be part of it. This isn’t just our museum—it’s yours.”
