Liverpool’s flawless start to the Premier League season was ended by Crystal Palace on Saturday. Arne Slot’s squad were aiming for a sixth consecutive victory, but Oliver Glasner’s Eagles ran out as 2-1 winners at Selhurst Park.

The current Premier League champions were noticeably off the pace in the first half, which could have seen Palace take a commanding lead. Despite an improved performance in the second half and a late goal from Federico Chiesa that almost secured a draw, a last-gasp winner in the 98th minute clinched the points for last season’s FA Cup winners.

The agonising defeat will undoubtedly sting for the Reds, especially with Arsenal’s last-minute victory over Newcastle on Sunday adding salt to the wound. Liverpool still sit atop the table, but now only two points ahead of Mikel Arteta’s side.

However, Liverpool will be hoping to secure back-to-back victories in the Champions League on Tuesday when they face Turkish side Galatasaray. With transfer rumours surrounding Marc Guehi and Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise intensifying, and a palpable change in mood within the Liverpool camp following the loss to Palace, we take a look at all the latest news from Anfield.

Wayne Rooney’s Marc Guehi warning

Ex-Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has expressed uncertainty about whether Guehi will end up at Liverpool. The Palace captain was on the brink of joining the Reds on transfer deadline day, but the deal fell through at the last moment.

Rooney, however, doesn’t believe it’s a certainty that the England centre-back will secure a switch to Anfield in January or during the summer window, reports the Mirror.

“I think he’s a special player,” Rooney said of Guehi on his self-titled podcast. “He’s a good size, he’s not the tallest but he’s good in the air, he can play with both feet, he’s aggressive. I think he’ll be a really top player in the next few years. Will he be at Palace next year? I really doubt it.”

When questioned about where he believes Guehi will end up, Rooney joked: “Definitely not Liverpool. No, listen, I think he’ll have options, not just in England, in Europe as well.

“I’ve just got a feeling Arsenal and Chelsea might come in and take Liverpool out of it. But Liverpool for me is the best city in the world, so if he does join that’s where he’ll be going, so just enjoy Liverpool. But I hope he doesn’t, because I think he’d improve them.”

Mood change in Liverpool camp

The Palace setback appears to have influenced the atmosphere within the Reds’ squad to some degree. Liverpool were put through rigorous training sessions during their final preparations before departing for Turkey on Monday.

Slot oversaw the training session and had a brief word with his squad before proceedings commenced. Following a swift warm-up involving running exercises, the players utilised resistance bands and medicine balls.

The group subsequently moved to the opposite end of the pitch and participated in a small-sided match. However, the usually jovial atmosphere at Liverpool’s Kirkby base seemed to have taken a more serious tone with less joking around, indicating that there’s work to be done.

Reds receive Olise update

Liverpool have been given a new update on Bayern’s Olise. The Reds have previously expressed interest in the French international and recent developments suggest they might still be in the running to sign the former Palace winger.

Bundesliga expert Christian Falk has revealed in his CF Bayern Insider column that Liverpool are ‘watching’ Olise, with Manchester City also showing interest in the Frenchman. However, there are hints that the Bundesliga giants are keen to offer Olise a new contract to ward off interest from rival clubs

Bayern are reportedly looking around £87million if they were to part with their star player. Olise has scored four goals and provided an equal number of assists for Bayern in his first eight appearances this season.
