Rasmus Hojlund scored a brace for Napoli to inspire a win over Sporting CP in European action and sent a message that will sting anyone of a Manchester United persuasion.

The forward pointed to the Champions League emblem on his sleeve as he celebrated his opening goal at Napoli’s Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

The Denmark international was played in by ex-Manchester City maestro Kevin De Bruyne before offering a cool finish to hand his new team a 1-0 lead, placing the ball through the legs of Rui Silva.

Sporting came back into the game when Luis Suarez scored from the penalty spot in the second half but Hojlund was not finished.

De Bruyne was once again the provider to curl a teasing ball into the area and loanee Manchester United striker Hojlund imposed himself in front of Silva to score a header and spark more jubilant celebrations.

The Dane bumped chests with his former cross-city rival as he really ignited his career under Antonio Conte. Before his efforts against Sporting, Hojlund had scored just one goal.

The ex-Atalanta striker joined Napoli on loan in the summer, in a deal that includes a £5million loan fee and a reported obligation to make the move permanent for £38m, should the Italian giants qualify for the Champions League next term.

Hojlund was not the only loan star to shine in the Champions League as United endure a season without European football. Marcus Rashford delivered another assist for Barcelona in their defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking after his move to Napoli, Hojlund said: “I come with a lot of international experience, I played in the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, and in multiple countries. I come with a lot to prove. I want to show myself in the best team in Italy, and Napoli is going to be very, very good.”

“I always work hard, I like to say I want to die on the pitch, to give everything for the team, to score goals, create, and fight for everything,” he added.
