Sheffield United midfielder Tom Davies ‘showed his class’ against Southampton, says The Star reporter Danny Hall.

Sheffield United were beaten 2-1 at home by the Saints in their latest Championship outing on Tuesday night. Tyrese Campbell was on the scoresheet for SUFC.

Davies, 27, has been with the Blades since joining them back in 2023. However, he has since spent a lot of time in the treatment room but is now back fit which is a boost.

Journalist Hall was impressed with his most recent display and delivered his verdict, as per a report by The Star: “From then on there were moments when he showed his class, just appearing to have a few seconds more time than anyone else on the pitch and never panicked when under pressure as he got out of trouble so easily with a drop of the shoulder or a shift in body movement.

“But there were inevitable signs of ring-rust as well and (Ross) Stewart was able to get away from both him and (Mark) McGuinness before unleashing a superb effort from 25 yards that gave (Michael) Cooper no chance. The standing ovation he got when he made way for Matos, though, was well-earned and both he and United will hope this is just the beginning.”

Sheffield United return for Tom Davies

Sheffield United snapped up Davies two years ago to boost their midfield department. When fit, he gives SUFC more competition and depth in the middle of the park.

His contract at Bramall Lane expires in 2026 so they have a big decision to make regarding his long-term future. The Blades risk losing him for free in June next year.

Davies has only played 26 games for Sheffield United in all competitions to date, 16 of which came last season. He rose up through the academy at Everton and was a regular for the Toffees at various different youth levels as a youngster.

The ex-England youth international went on to play 179 matches during his time at Goodison Park. He chipped in with seven goals along the way.

What now for Sheffield United and Tom Davies?

Sheffield United picked up their first win last weekend against Oxford United. Callum O’Hare got SUFC’s goal against the U’s at the Kassam Stadium.

They weren’t able to build on that result against Southampton. The Blades will be disappointed that they didn’t get anything against the Saints, especially after taking the lead.

Sheffield United were beaten by Sunderland in the play-off final back in May. Wilder was subsequently sacked and replaced by ex-ReadingSouthampton and Hull City man Ruben Selles.

Selles’ tenure was a disaster though and he lost his first six matches in all competitions in charge. He was then given the chop and Wilder was re-appointed for a third time.

The Blades remain bottom of the table. They are inside the drop zone with Sheffield Wednesday and Oxford United.

They are back in action this weekend in their final outing before the international break. A trip to East Yorkshire to play Hull City lies in store. The Tigers have a few of their ex-players like Oli McBurnie, John Egan, John Lundstram and Regan Slater.
