The PS5 has been around for nearly five years now, and throughout that time, the PS4 has still been a big part of the wider gaming landscape.
With an enormous install base and more accessible price point, Sony’s last-gen console has lived a much longer lifespan than most other machines, with many modern games still releasing for it.
Well, it seems as though Sony might finally be taking steps to wind down support for PS4.
According to a new report from Insider Gaming, Sony is planning to sunset some legacy services related to the console early next year.
Citing documentation sent to the outlet, Insider Gaming says the following PS4 services are on the chopping block for all games submitted for release after Spring 2026:
- Activity Feed Web API
- Title Small Storage (TSS)
- Title User Storage (TUS)
- Users and Profiles
- Word Filters
- Shared Media Web API
These features “are designed to provide a more unified and scalable foundation across console generations”, reads the report.
It all points to Sony beginning to phase out the platform as it hopes to migrate remaining PS4 users onto PS5.
This and the previous generation have been running much closer together than previously. Despite PS5 selling very well, and being PlayStation’s most successful generation overall, the PS4 has been seeing a healthy amount of activity thanks to frequent cross-gen software releases.
We expect that this trend will continue when the PS6 rolls around in a couple of years or so; the new console will be the focus, with many titles also releasing on PS5.
