James Nelson-Joyce said it means the world to him as he featured in a new BBC campaign in his home city. The 36-year-old proved his leading man credentials as the star of This City Is Ours.

The Scouse actor won acclaim for his portrayal of conflicted gang boss, Michael Kavanagh, in the first season of the hit BBC show. James issued an exciting update yesterday as he revealed production for season two of This City Is Ours was ramping up. He shared a picture of the cast and an image of his script for season two episode one, as he took part in a table read for the new series.

A timer emoji was used by the actor as he captioned it “TCIO”. This City Is Ours is one many BBC productions that have put the spotlight on Liverpool recent years.

A new campaign titled Made Of Here is celebrating the many Liverpool set shows in recent years. James’ onscreen counterpart is one of many to feature on the billboard and the actor said he was delighted to spot Michael Kavanagh lit up on a massive screen on Edge Lane.

He was pictured in front of the billboard, as he said how honoured he was to be included alongside other stars of Liverpool set shows. He said: “It’s fantastic to see characters from This City is Ours, including my own, Michael Kavanagh, on screens in my hometown. Everyone involved in making the show is made up about how well it’s gone down with viewers, particularly across Merseyside.

“It means the world to me to be part of something that’s made and set in my city. When you see your hometown on screen it makes you feel proud and importantly, it shows young people that there are opportunities to work in TV where they live.”

The Edge Lane billboard is one of more than a 100 that can be seen around the city centre. Also pictured on the billboard are cast members Kevin Harvey, who plays Bobby Duffy (left) and Mike Noble, who plays Banksey (centre).

Other eye-catching artwork around the city includes characters from Time series two and The Responder, which were all filmed in Liverpool.

James issued an exciting update on the next chapter of This City Is Ours in an interview with the ECHO earlier this year, as he said: “We start filming This City Is Ours in October, start pre production in September and that’s all I can really say at the moment.”

James spoke to the ECHO at the A Celebration of Zoe’s Place concert and was a special guest at the event. The actor was holding meetings with This City Is Ours producers on the day of the concert when he contacted event organisers to see if there was any way he could show his support for the charity, as it entered a new era as Little Lights.

Organisers invited James to the gig and he introduced Jamie Webster on stage for the This Place singer’s set. The actor added: “I am proud of where I’m from and if I can do anything to help this city, I always will. As soon as the phone call came through, I thought, yeah I’ll come down, no problem.”

James arrived on stage to rapturous applause from the thousands in attendance and he admitted he is still getting used to the fame that’s come with being the star of a BBC show. He laughed: “I feel like a bit of a sausage half the time. Nothing has changed in my life.

“I’m still the same old, but if if brings someone happiness or two seconds of joy by taking a picture or talking to someone, then why wouldn’t you? I remember being a kid and standing outside Melwood asking players for pictures so why wouldn’t you?”
