This is the face of a prison officer who formed an inappropriate relationship with an inmate and smuggled contraband into prison. Amie Turner, 34, pleaded guilty of misconduct in a public office and encouraging the use of a mobile phone inside HMP Manchester.
Manchester Crown Court heard yesterday, October 1, that Turner’s secret came to light in April 2016 when intelligence reports first raised concerns about her behaviour. A joint investigation by the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit (NWROCU) and the HMPPS Counter Corruption Unit revealed Turner had been communicating with multiple mobile phones, some of which were believed to be inside the prison.
Analysis of phone records confirmed Turner was making calls to a mobile phone located within HMP Manchester.
Turner, 34, of Alexandra Road, Bolton, was sentenced to 15 months in jail.
Detective Inspector Brian Morley, from NWROCU’s Prison Investigation Unit, emphasised the seriousness of the case, saying: “This case highlights the serious consequences of corruption within the prison system.
“We will continue to work tirelessly with partner agencies and police forces across the region to root out such behaviour and ensure the integrity of our prisons.”
He added: “We want to reassure the honest, dedicated, and hardworking prison staff that through partnership working with our prisons across the region, and the HMPPS Counter Corruption Unit, we will continue to take action against people who choose to engage in corrupt activity.
“We encourage anyone who has information about corruption in our prisons to report it.”
