Royston in Hertfordshire was recently named on Muddy Stilettos’ annual ‘Best Places to Live’ list for the county.

The list highlights the areas of the UK that are “like no other”, with some described as “foodie havens”.

The town is easy to reach from London, with trains taking just 36 minutes via Kings Cross Station, or you can drive there in just under two hours via the A1.

The ‘intriguing’ Hertfordshire town

Sharing why Royston made the list, Muddy Stilettos said: “With its own heath, gardens and nature reserve, not to mention its annual kite festival and intriguing history, you’ll find country living a breeze in Royston.”

The outlet describes Royston as packing “a big punch for a small town”, with its acres of “heathland, historic High Street packed with local businesses” and a cave.

Highlighting some of the best places to eat in the town, cafés Number 41 and The Heath on the Therfield Nature Reserve both earn nods from Muddy Stilettos.

Elsewhere, Kelly’s Kitchen and Kooky Nohmad are described as great places to visit for a “handy coffee, brunch and co-working space”.

Royston also offers a great space for independent shopping, with stores including fashion boutiques and lifestyle shops La Bella Vita and Mia Caro, as well as bookshops Bow Books and florist Bloom.

The town’s community earns big praise from the outlet: “There are tonnes of communal spaces to enjoy here, from the pretty Priory Memorial Gardens with its multiple Green Flag awards, kids’ play area and splash parks – one of a whopping 12 play areas in the town.”

Property prices in Royston average £340,000 for a terraced home, while a semi-detached is around £405,000 and a detached property will set you back £586,000.
