Over the coming months, people across Nottinghamshire can expect to experience major changes to bin collections as households prepare for new collections and deliveries of new bins.
December 2025 will be the first point for major changes to be introduced – with households across Rushcliffe being offered a new recycling collection from that point.
Many of the new measures are coming into force given nationwide changes under the government’s ‘Simpler Recycling’ programme.
The initiative has two key requirements affecting Nottinghamshire councils – the need for a dedicated kerbside food waste collection and the need for a kerbside glass collection.
The measures introduced by the previous government aim to ensure that all homes in England recycle the same materials from the kerbside. The hope is that it will make recycling easier to understand and the ‘Simpler Recycling’ programme will be introduced from March 2026.
Below are some of the key dates as Nottinghamshire authorities prepare for the changes.
December 2025
Many Nottinghamshire authorities already offer a kerbside glass collection, but Rushcliffe Borough Council is one of the councils that does not currently do so. The authority says its new service will begin from December 2025.
The authority is delivering new purple-lidded, 180-litre bins across the borough as part of this. The council also says that it is therefore reviewing and removing many existing recycling sites across the borough.
March 2026
Nottingham City Council is due to start delivering its food waste collection service from 2026, having already been trialling it since 2023. Other Nottinghamshire authorities will be bringing in the food waste service from 2027 after negotiating a deadline extension.
Bassetlaw is another authority that does not currently offer kerbside glass collection and the council will also be delivering 180-litre bins out in the coming months. Bassetlaw’s glass service will start from March 2026.
Newark and Sherwood District Council already runs a glass recycling service. Alongside the kerbside food waste collection, the main reform affecting the authority will involve dry mixed recycling items being allowed in silver bins by March 31, 2026.
April 2026
Broxtowe Borough Council says residents will be able to put more items in green bins from April 2026. The authority says further information on the types of materials allowed will be released in the new year.
A report from the authority confirms that plastic pots and and foil trays will be among the new items it accepts from April.
