"Situated near Frome in Somerset, Nunney Castle is a small, French style castle surrounded by a deep moat, built for Sir John Delamare in 1373. A veteran of the Hundred Years War, Sir John would later become Sheriff of Somerset. During the Civil Wars (1642-51) Cromwell's men used cannon to blast a great hole in the north wall of the castle, forcing the garrison to surrender. The badly damaged wall finally collapsed into the moat in 1910. With the clocks almost ready to go back and chillier weather settling in, now’s the perfect moment to arrange a snug winter break closer to home.

Fortunately, Britain boasts some magnificent locations, with beloved destinations scattered throughout the nation.

Should you find yourself lacking ideas, there’s a scenic village that’s been previously dubbed England’s ‘most beautiful’ that’s absolutely worth discovering this winter.

Nunney represents a tranquil settlement positioned directly within the West Country’s core, nestled in Somerset’s Mendip district. This community is rich in heritage, much of which remains visible today, reports the Mirror.

Its ancient fortress, traditional village inn and gorgeous landscape serve as standout attractions for those who visit.

The French-influenced stronghold, originally constructed for Sir John Dalaware in 1371, sits encircled by a substantial moat and reportedly drew inspiration from Paris’s Bastille.

The structure’s walls remain mostly undamaged and exist “in perfect scale with its surroundings”, as stated by Visit Somerset.

Enthusiastic ramblers will be delighted to find the village pathway.

Obtainable from Frome’s Tourist Information centre, this route offers the finest method for discovering the settlement’s notable features.

Should you develop an appetite whilst wandering around Nunney, you might fancy popping into The George inn, which conveniently sits directly across from the fortress.

Operating as a classic 17th-century coaching establishment, The George boasts visible timber beams and crackling hearths during winter months, whilst offering substantial regional cuisine alongside 10 guest rooms for visitors travelling from more distant locations. To make the most of your journey, consider a detour to Frome, a mere two miles from Nunney.

Recognised as one of the Times “Best Places to Live in Britain”, Frome is celebrated for its historic architecture and unique independent shops.

Bearing the title of “the original Somerset Market Town”, Frome has maintained this tradition with regular markets every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Additionally, the Frome Independent Market graces the town on the first Sunday of each month from March through December.

Often referred to as a “mini festival”, this monthly market transforms the entire town, drawing in thousands of visitors who come to explore its shopping stalls, local food and drink vendors, and street entertainment.
