The Denver Broncos had a signature “Club Dub” locker room celebration after a 21-17 upset win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, but the celebrations did not go late into the night, at least not at the stadium.

After the game, players returned to the team hotel for dinner and then went to the airport for the club’s overnight trip to England ahead of this week’s international game against the New York Jets in London. Despite the short turnaround, Broncos coach Sean Payton did not let the upcoming travel distract players going into the Eagles game.

“One of the challenges is playing this game before you go to London,” Payton said after Sunday’s win. “You guys have heard me say it, the away teams before London, it’s not real good. So, it wasn’t in itineraries. There was not one thing about the L word, nothing. I said something about bringing an extra bag Friday and that’s it, and then we’ll figure out [details]. Because it’s very easy to get caught up in, if you’re not careful, the next week and the focus needed to be on today.

“And then you’re coming off of Monday night. There were a lot of reasons you could say you weren’t going to be successful, but our guys did a good job of preparing and I think the locker room prior to today felt like this was going to be the result. I mean I’ve done this long enough, I’ve got pretty good instincts and as a coach, you’re waiting to see. At halftime, I felt really good, despite the unsuccessful drives offensively, I loved where we were at.”

Denver overcame a 14-point deficit on Sunday and scored 18 unanswered points in a comeback win. There may have been some lingering celebrations early on the flight to the U.K., but players were likely ready to sleep before too long as they move on to the next game week. Apart from an overnight flight, it will mostly feel like a regular game week.

“It’s going to be exactly like a practice week,” Payton said. “Exactly. You want the schedule? No sightseeing. We’re staying in the middle of nowhere, no sightseeing. Honestly, fair question. So, we get in Monday. Tomorrow morning we will run, lift out, watch the tape. They’re off Tuesday. We’ve got this schedule down pat. Wednesday will be day one, Thursday third down. So that’s the reason for going over [Sunday night].

“There’s two other times [I’ve] gone on this trip. Once, [Jeremy] Shockey tried to get all the passports and take the team to Amsterdam. So we put the kibosh on that. We played the Chargers, I think one year, ‘07, ‘08. And then we played the Dolphins in ‘17 or ‘18. The guys will have some dinner I’m sure. It’s a normal work week, but we’re a ways out.”

Denver’s first practice of the week is scheduled for Wednesday. We should have more news on the injury front following that initial practice. For now, though, the Broncos will enjoy Sunday’s win and rest up ahead of a big game across the pond.
