An American man found himself the butt of a joke at Germany’s Oktoberfest. The annual festival is a major tourist attraction, with millions of visitors descending on Munich, Germany and surrounding areas to partake in the festivities.
Traditionally held from mid-September until the first Sunday in October, the event was initially an October-centric celebration. It first began as part of the celebrations for the royal wedding between Crown Prince Ludwig and his wife Therese in 1810 and has since evolved into a cultural phenomenon.
The festival combines a beer extravaganza with traditional Bavarian culture, parades, amusement rides, food stalls, and more. Attendees can also enjoy music and traditional Bavarian attire like dirndls and lederhosen.
A dirndl is a traditional women’s dress, featuring a tight-fitting bodice with a low neckline, and a wide gathered skirt. It’s typically worn with an apron over the top and a blouse underneath.
Lederhosen, most commonly worn by men in southern Germany, Austria, and other parts of Europe, are leather breeches that have become a popular choice among many tourists.
This is where American Ethan ran into trouble. The 21 year old Californian traveled to Germany for Oktoberfest and was sold a pair of “extra small” lederhosen by a man who “convinced” him that’s how all Germans wear them.
Feeling “ridiculed” and laughed at, Ethan took to TikTok to share a humorous video of himself wearing the snug lederhosen while standing next to a woman in a dirndl.
Over the top of the footage, he added text that read: “Last year I wore an extra small lederhosen to Oktoberfest. The European man who sold it to me convinced me that all Germans wear it this tight.
“But no, it was a plot to ridicule me and the United States of America. All of Germany laughed at me that day.”

In the caption accompanying the playful clip, he wrote: “You can hear the local Germans laugh at me in the video”.
People were eager to share their thoughts in the comments section. One person said: “All you had to do was a little research, literally just look up Oktoberfest fits”, adding a laughing face emoji.
Another quipped: “They laugh at us regardless of your tight lederhosen.”
A third commented: “They’re supposed to be really tight just not super short” while another remarked: “NGL [not gonna lie] kinda funny prank”.
A fifth questioned: “And you believed them?”
But someone else countered: “Okay so you guys in the comments, if YOU went to another country and was told by a local salesman how to wear something, you wouldn’t take their word for it? Yeah right..”
Another agreed: “Jokes on them. You’re rocking it”.
One person stated: “‘Should’ve done research’ my bad I assumed the person living in the country would be knowledgeable enough to take them at their word.”
Another person added: “Everyone’s saying you should have done research, it’s ok man. you trusted someone who you thought was being nice. That’s a good heart.”
