Gerrard has held discussions with Ibrox chiefs over a potential return to the club he managed for three years between 2018 and 2021. Rangers sacked Russell Martin in Sunday evening and their former boss was immediately ranked as one of the favourites to take over.

The talks have since taken place and the 45-year-old looks to be a very strong candidate for the job.

Michael Beale, who would go on to manage Rangers, and Gary McAllister were part of his backroom team previously and could also return but there is reportedly another man on Gerrard’s radar.

Steve Holland was Gareth Southgate’s assistant at England, previously worked at Chelsea and was recently sacked by Yokohama F Marinos as their manager.

The Daily Record is reporting Gerrard has him lined up to be part of his backroom team.

The Liverpool legend spoke on Rio Ferdinand’s podcast this week about the need to have the right people around him when he does return to management.

He said: “I haven’t been ready because I haven’t got that (coaching) team set around me.

“And the timing hasn’t been right. But if the right call comes my way, the right club, the right challenge – and I’ve got my people set which I’ll have at some point – I’ll take that challenge on because it’s in me.

“I felt like I had that to a tee at Rangers (with Gary McAllister, Michael Beale and Tom Culshaw).

“I’d love another go at some point. I want to change a few things and improve a few things then come back fresh with different people around me.

“I’d love another couple of challenges and that’s what I’m working on in the background at the moment. A few different ideas, a few different people around me.”
