From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The first episode of Celebrity Traitors hit screens last night and to say it was a rollercoaster would be an understatement.

Unlike the civilian version of the series, which has become a major hit for the BBC, viewers didn’t need to be introduced to the contestants, because BBC producers managed to bring in a genuinely star-studded cast including the likes of comedian Alan Carr, musician Paloma Faith and actor Celia Imrie.

In the debut episode, the celebrities barely had time to take in their surroundings before being put to task on their first challenge, where they literally had to dig their own graves to find shields, to protect them from the series’ first murder.

Jonathan Ross, Joe Wilkinson, Joe Marler, Kate Garraway, Celie Imrie and Charlotte Church all found a shield, though Charlotte later gave hers away after the first mission went wrong, thanks to a mishap from Clare Balding.

Meanwhile, host Claudia Winkleman selected Alan, alongside singer-songwriter Cat Burns and TV host Jonathan Ross, as the first three traitors of the series. In a major twist, the first murder of the show will be committed in plain sight.

In order to kill, Alan must mark the face of the first victim with a black lily, but we’ll have to wait until tonight to see who perishes.

Cliffhanger ending!

Ooh those little cheats! Stephen is up next, but we have cut to credits. Who will be eliminated? Find out next Wednesday, sigh.

Cat has voted for Kate, citing her “loudness”.

Three for Kate, three for Niko, two for Tameka, one for Tom.

Niko has voted for Tom, saying “The UK’s golden boy might have a good traitor streak in him.”

Poor, seemingly doomed Kate has voted for Tameka.

The votes are in! Ruth has voted for Kate, citing her “changed behaviour” and “more animated” expressions whenever traitor-nonsense occurs.

Tameka votes for Kate, too. Citing the same.

Mark votes for Tameka for “inconsistencies in behaviour”.

We’ve reached the part of the show where everyone’s just going around in circles a bit, aren’t they?

Kate, Tameka, Niko and Tom have all been marked for suspicion, but often due to “overreactions” or vague suggestions of game playing. Everyone’s just grasping at straws, which I suppose is how The Traitors has always functioned.

Anyway, now it is time for the votes…

Adam White9 October 2025 21:57

Niko is doing a good job defending himself, by the way. Suspicion has fallen on him, with suggestion that he deliberately put himself in one of the coffins earlier to throw people off the scent. But this theory, as Niko correctly suggests, is pretty silly.

Next up for suspicion: Tameka, Mark saying that her reaction to the coffin task was over-the-top.

Perhaps these are all very dramatic famous people doing the absolute most because they’re very dramatic famous people?

Fashion interlude!

A quick interjection courtesy of our fashion writers!

Claudia has brought her sartorial A-game to compete with the starry – and stylish – A-lister contestants. In episode one, the presenter debuted a mega pair of Givenchy boots and an elegant Chloe military-style coat. But for this episode, Claudia’s stylist Sinead McKeefry has upped the ante with the punk-infused outfits – think black stomper boots, ruffled shirts and even a lace veil for the “funeral”. Find out the full outfit details from the first two episodes below.

After Stephen quotes Sherlock Holmes (naturally), we get to the good stuff. Kate addresses that she’s aware people are suspicious of her. Cat offers her two cents: “In the mission today, I didn’t know whether your larger response to Paloma’s [murder] was an overcompensation or a genuine feeling.”

“I’m a massive ham!” Kate replies.

“You’re celebrities. You’re used to people lying to you. ‘I loved that show’. ‘That’s a great jacket’. ‘I listened to that particular podcast twice’.”

At the first roundtable, Claudia continues to prove herself the best in the business with this show.

In conversation with Alan, Cat and Charlotte, Tom has mentioned Kate’s “I’m flabbergasted!” remark.

“You can’t just call someone a traitor because they have a better vocabulary than you,” Alan jokes.

Everyone is still a bit destabilised by Paloma’s untimely murder as they gear up for the first roundtable.

Also Tom may have missed a button.
