Join Together Northern Nevada (JTNN), in collaboration with local law enforcement, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and community partners, is hosting the semiannual Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 25
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 10 locations across Washoe County.
The event provides residents a safe and responsible way to dispose of expired or unused prescription medications.
Organizers say proper disposal is important because medications flushed or thrown away can contaminate water sources, unintentionally expose people and wildlife to chemicals, and increase the risk of accidental ingestion, especially among children or pets. Unused prescriptions may also contribute to misuse or abuse.
“Substance misuse may lead to accidental overdoses or abuse, especially among young children and teens,” organizers said. “It’s important to address the issue holistically, and reducing access to unused medications is a significant step in that direction.”
During the last Spring Take Back Day, more than 2,007 pounds of prescription medications were collected, with over 700 community members participating.
This year, organizers added a new location, Bethel AME Church in Sparks, bringing the total to 10 collection sites:
Reno:
- Raley’s, 18144 Wedge Parkway
- Raley’s, 1630 Robb Drive
- Reno Elks Lodge, 597 Kumle Lane
- Smith’s, 175 Lemmon Drive
- Smith’s, 750 South Meadows Parkway
Sparks:
- Smith’s, 1255 Baring Blvd.
- Baldini’s Casino, 865 S. Rock Blvd.
- Bethel AME Church, 2655 N. Rock Blvd.
Spanish Springs:
- Reno Sparks Indian Colony Smoke Shop, 7655 Pyramid Way
Cold Springs:
- Cold Springs Community Center, 3355 White Lake Pkwy
Residents are encouraged to bring any unused or expired prescription medications. Law enforcement officials will be on site to ensure proper collection and disposal, with all medications collected by the DEA.
Sharps and inhalers will not be accepted. Alternative drop-off locations for sharps include the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Northern Nevada Hopes on West 5th Street, and Northern Nevada Public Health.
Inhalers can be dropped off at Waste Management or participating pharmacies.
“Prescription drug misuse continues to be a public health concern, and events like RX Takeback Day help reduce the availability of unused medications in our community,” organizers said. “By providing a secure drop-off location, we hope to promote awareness and encourage safe disposal practices.”
