Cheltenham Town have signed USA Under-23 international defender Jonathan Tomkinson on a deal until the end of the season.

The Texas-born 23-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Norwich City in the summer.

Tomkinson, 6ft 4in, has previous League Two experience from loan spells with Stevenage and Bradford City, as well as a stint in the Scottish Premiership with Ross County.

He made one Championship start for Norwich, away to Burnley in October 2022.

Tomkinson faced Cheltenham during the 2020/21 EFL Trophy campaign, playing for Norwich’s Under-21s at Whaddon Road in a match settled by a George Lloyd goal.

He becomes Steve Cotterill’s second signing since returning as manager last Tuesday, following the arrival of experienced midfielder Ben Stevenson.

With forward George Miller sidelined until mid-January after hamstring surgery, there is now space in the squad for a third free agent addition outside of the transfer window.

Cheltenham visit Gillingham in League Two on Saturday (3pm).
