Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has withdrawn from the running to return to Rangers following the dismissal of Russell Martin. The 45-year-old had been the frontrunner to become the Scottish giants’ new manager.
Martin was axed earlier this week after a disappointing start to the campaign. Gerrard, by contrast, achieved remarkable success during his initial tenure with the club, breaking their decade-long drought for a Scottish top-flight championship.
However, Sky Sports have now confirmed that Gerrard has withdrawn himself from the process to become Martin’s replacement. It’s understood that both parties conducted ‘positive’ discussions regarding the position, though Gerrard believed the timing wasn’t quite suitable for a return at this juncture.

Nevertheless, it’s thought he has consented to keep the door ajar for a future return. Gerrard steered Rangers to the Scottish Premiership crown in 2021, delivering a stunning undefeated league season that campaign.
Earlier this week, Gerrard acknowledged he believed there was ‘unfinished business’ in his managerial journey.
“There’s a part of me that still feels that there’s a bit of unfinished business in terms of wanting to go in and face another couple of exciting challenges,” he said on the ‘Rio Meets’ podcast.
“But I want a certain type of challenge. If in an ideal world they come available, I’ll jump at them.”

As Rangers shift their focus elsewhere, former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is believed to have made a strong impression on the club’s hierarchy during the selection process.
Rohl, who has been out of work since leaving the Championship side in July, was reportedly approached by Rangers in the summer prior to Martin’s appointment.
