A family member of one of the children struck by a vehicle trailer in Dumfries as revealed the shocking extent of their injuries.

The horrific incident occurred when a loose trailer flew off the road and struck a pram on pavement on Monday afternoon.

An eight month old baby and 14 and 18-month-old toddlers were inside the buggy being pushed by a young nursery worker.

The children and 18-year-old female nursery employee were all rushed to hospital.

A relative of one of the injured children shared on social media that his grandson suffered serious injuries.

He said: “My grandson was in the accident. He’s in hospital in Glasgow.

“His injuries are serious. He suffered a broken leg, bad lacerations to his face and a tear in his spleen.

“The young lady who was looking after them was injured as well.”

He also revealed that another child suffered a serious head injury.

Eyewitnesses Charlie Jones and Andrew Clarke, both 19, were on a camping trip in Scotland when the crash unfolded.

Teenagers Charlie Jones, left, and Andrew Clarke, right, were first responders on the scene.

The teenagers, who were on their way home to Cheshire, were first responders on the scene.

Charlie said: “It was the worst thing I’ve ever seen. It was very traumatic.

“Andrew was driving and we turned onto the road and saw a trailer on the pavement in a wall and a girl lying on the ground holding a baby.

“We stopped the car and got out. The girl was screaming for us to call the police, pointing over to a pram.

“Andrew phoned 999 and I ran over and saw the pram trapped between the wall and trailer. I helped another two men pull the trailer away.

“One child was standing screaming and two babies were in the pram. One looked as though it had a cut above the eye but the other baby was seriously injured.

“An off-duty fireman and a local woman called Sharon stopped to help us.

“She was amazing and took control of the situation while we waited for emergency services.

“Staff from a local nursery also arrived with first aid kits.

“I ripped my T-shirt off to give to Sharon to help stem the blood flow from one of the children’s injuries.

“The children were screaming. It was horrific. We’ve been praying for everyone involved.”

Paramedics and fire crews descended on the scene on Pleasance Avenue with police officers working to close the road to allow an investigation to take place.

Charlie and Andrew left Dumfries around two hours later after giving statements to officers. Charlie added: “Neighbours were bringing out towels as well as cups of tea. Everybody there just wanted to help do what they could. “It was the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”

The baby and two toddlers were taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary before being transferred to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.

The 18-year-old nursery worker was taken to a hospital in Dumfries and has since been released.

Yesterday the nursery, which asked not to be named, said it was cooperating with the authorities.

A statement read: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic accident involving three of our beloved children. Our hearts are with them and their families during this incredibly difficult time.”

The trailer is believed to have detached from a Mitsubishi Outlander car and collided with a pedestrian and pram.

Police Scotland is appealing for any witnesses to contact them.

Sergeant David Kerr, of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit, said: “Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and we would urge anyone who has witnessed it to come forward.

“We would also be keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage from the area.

“Anyone who can help is asked to call 101, quoting reference 1870 of 13 October.”
