Scotland’s food and drink sector is famed around the world for producing goods including whisky, salmon, and shortbread, but perhaps on a more local level, also for treats such as Bovril, sausage rolls, and macaroni pies.

And now, a beloved Scottish bakery known for those macaroni pies, as well as fudge doughnuts and chicken salad rolls, is set to open a new store in an up-and-coming part of what is now considered the west end of Glasgow.

Bayne’s, ‘the family bakers’, has been granted permission for a new shop in Anniesland, situated in the middle of the West End and Knightswood. Broomhill, Bearsden, and Milngavie are all nearby as well.

Once home to RS McColl, 1612 Great Western Road will now be transformed into a Bayne’s, according to Glasgow Times. The proposal outlines a significant overhaul of the premises, including dividing the property into two units.

The third generation family bakery, with Fife roots, is set to bring the recognisable Bayne’s branding to Anniesland.

The venue will offer indoor seating, albeit limited, meaning it might be a grab-and-go situation for some.

If you’re wondering when you can pop in to get a tea or a coffee, or something more substantial, opening hours for are proposed to be from 5.30am until 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 7am until 4.30pm on Sunday.

The opening date is not yet known.

Bayne’s, which started in the village of Lochore in 1954, has grown massively throughout the decades, from two shops in 1964, to now boasting nearly 100 locations across Scotland, from Arbroath to Wishaw.

This year, Bayne’s marked a whopping 70 years of “bringing fresh, quality baking to communities across Scotland”.

A statement on its website reads: “From our very first shop in Lochore to 71 locations today, one thing has always stayed the same – our commitment to putting customers at the heart of everything we do.

“As we look to the future, we’re excited to continue expanding our range, all while staying true to the tradition, quality and value that have defined Bayne’s for over seven decades.”

Bayne’s very ambitiously plans to open new shops each year, with “the next chapter in our journey promising to be just as exciting, and just as full of great tasting Scottish baking”.

It comes as, not far up the road, a major retailer has submitted plans to replace a M&S Simply Food unit following its closure at the end of the month.

Sainsbury’s have submitted plans to open a Sainsbury’s Local store at 169 Great George Street, just off Byres Road, in the heart of the west end. The store would replace the M&S Simply Food store, set to close on October 25, 2025.

Glasgow City Council have set a decision date of Friday, November 28, 2025.
