Sainsbury’s has revealed plans to take over a Marks and Spencer store in Glasgow following its closure at the end of the month.
If the plans proceed, the M&S store on Great George Street near Byres Road in the West End of the city could soon become a Sainsbury’s Local.
The M&S will close its doors for the final time on October 25.
The retailer said the decision was made after “careful consideration and in line with our lease ending”.
A spokesperson for M&S previously said: “As we reshape for growth, we want every store we have to offer the best possible shopping experience for our customers.”
Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd has submitted a planning application to Glasgow City Council for permission to put up new signage on the storefront.
“The proposal seeks to facilitate occupation of the existing retail space with a Sainsbury’s Local,” a planning statement on behalf of Sainsbury’s said.
“The store will provide a meaningful range of everyday convenience goods that will ensure residents can continue to meet their top-up shopping requirements locally.”
The retailer is seeking advertisement consent for the installation of two fascia signs, one projecting sign and vinyl signage at the current M&S Food store on 169 Great George Street, which it said is “soon to be vacated to allow for occupation as a Sainsbury’s Local”.
