Meghan Markle is creating a whole new life for herself since departing from her royal duties in 2020, and now, she’s finally giving the public more insight into it. However, that doesn’t mean she always receives the best feedback.
In a new Instagram reel, where the As Ever founder shared behind-the-scenes clips of herself and her team traveling to Fortune’s ‘Most Powerful Women’ Summit, she could be seen toting around a bag with her royal title on it, the Duchess of Sussex. This sparked outrage from royal family enthusiasts and numerous internet users, who feel that since she’s no longer carrying out official royal duties as the Duchess of Sussex in the UK, she should not continue to sport the title, especially on merchandise. Ever since the airing of her lifestyle-themed Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, the former actress, has been posting a lot more personal videos and photos from her life with husband, Prince Harry, and their two children, Archie and Lilibet. She’s been a lot more active on her Instagram account, where she’s gone viral for sharing a few moments from her new life that she likely would not have shared a few years ago.
Earlier this week, her latest Instagram post, which was a reel, drew a lot of attention as she filmed herself and her team travelling and getting ready for Fortune’s ‘Most Powerful Women’ Summit in Washington, D.C., where she, alongside other influential women, gave an in-depth interview and shared some stories about her life as a mom, former actively working royal, and businesswoman.
In her Instagram reel, in certain clips, she can be seen walking around with her luggage for the event, which included a large, dark blue Longchamp tote bag, which had the letters’ DS’ printed on it in large, bright blue letters. It was clearly a custom bag, and quickly, both fashion enthusiasts and royal family fans put together that the DS must represent her royal title, the Duchess of Sussex.
The Internet Slams Meghan For Her Bag On Social Media
The mom-of-two’s royal title has been debated back and forth on the internet for some time now, since she and Prince Harry stepped down from their royal duties to move to America in 2020. Many believe she should no longer refer to herself as the Duchess of Sussex.
For a while, she didn’t bring it up that much, working to stay out of the limelight, but after referring to her last name as ‘Sussex’ on her controversial Netflix series and now, with her new tote bag, people are beginning to call her out on social media platforms like X, going as far as to call her “heinously tacky.”
“She says she’s moved on, but her tote bag clearly didn’t get the memo,” wrote another X user.
“That is so cringe,” added another, as one user called the bag “pretentious.”
“Nothing says independence quite like clinging to the crown you claim oppressed you,” posted a user.
We’ll be curious to see if Meghan holds off on any other Duchess references following the latest backlash. But for now, she still has her tote on her Instagram out and proud.
