Celebrating Halloween in Montgomery Street Park
Tje Montgomery Street Park will hold its Halloween party on 26 October from 5.30 until 6.30pm. There will be six prizes for the best children’s costumes- the scariest, spookiest and creative. The Costume Parade takes place at 5.45pm.
There will also be six prizes in the Pumpkin & Neep Carving Competition Award for the best pumpkin carvings and best neep/other carvings.
And remember that on 25 October volunteers are invited to join in the work to keep the garden looking great.

This week at the council
The City of Edinburgh Council is back to business this week with a range of meetings as councillors reconvene after recess.

- 10.00 am Meeting of Policy and Sustainability Committee on 21/10 at 10.00 am – Dean of Guild Court Room – City Chambers. The Convener is Jane Meagher who is also the Council Leader. The reports discussed at this committee have often been considered by other committees first. There will be a couple of deputations – one from Edinburgh Trades Union Council on the subject of Welcoming Overseas Care Workers which is one of the matters on the Business Bulletin and the other by Plant-based Councils regarding the petition to have the council commit 100% to plant based catering at all meetings and events where catering is provided internally. (Councillors will have to kiss goodbye to their Scotch pies occasionally seen on the lunch menu). A separate report on Smart City reports that the council has adopted a cloud first approach to new and upgraded computer and tech systems. One of these is the online payment system to support fines imposed for infractions in the Low Emission Zone in the city centre and also the planning to facilitate a national system for digital transactions related to the Visitor Levy. HY and Payroll have already been moved to cloud based systems and the council is at pains to explain the security measures in place.

- 10.00 am – 5.00 pm Meeting of Development Management Sub-Committee on 22/10 at 10.00 am – 5.00 pm – Dean of Guild Court Room – City Chambers. There are the usual applications for retrospective change of use in relation to properties used for short term let accommodation and most of these are destined to be refused in line with the council’s policy to maximise the number of properties available for longer term rental or residential use by locals. An application to demolish a property at Graham Street in Bonnington and replace it with a new residential development is recommended for approval. And one application at Meadowfield Farm on Turnhouse Road has already been granted the status of “minded to grant” subject to a legal agreement about developers’ contributions being put in place. The proposal will create a large mixed use development but more time is required to finalise developer contributions. (A developer makes a financial contribution to schools and other infrastructure) This is the Crosswinds Development which will be built on the former north south runway next to Edinburgh Airport which was little used due to the prevailing west wind.
- 12.00 pm Meeting of Pentland Hills Regional Park Joint Committee on 22/10 at 12.00 pm – Virtual Meeting – via Microsoft Teams
- 6.30 pm Meeting of Pentland Hills Regional Park Consultative Forum on 22/10 at 6.30 pm – Bonaly Primary School – 57 Bonaly Rd, Edinburgh EH13 0FJ

Critical Mass
The cycle ride which calls for action on our streets to make them safer for everyone is teaming up with Living Rent next weekend. Living Rent is demanding safer cycling in Lochend and that is where the mass cycle ride will go (and then back again). The ride will begin on Saturday at 2pm from Middle Meadow Walk and will follow the route below.

Then on 8 November from 11am to 2pm at Craigentinny Community Centre join Living Rent Edinburgh for a community day calling for safer roads. There will be a poster competition for under 16s, face painting for everyone but particularly younger children and the opportunity to share your experiences of roads in the area. Read more here.

Causewayside Lads Institute
One of our leading stories published on Friday centred on calls for the Lads Institute to be preserved in the face of continued applications for its demolition and replacement by a student flat development. There is a bit of cart and horse about this as the building has to be declared worthy of preservation with a Building Preservation Notice before Historic Environment Scotland can impose
Andy Arthur has written about the building, a mystery man and its colourful history – including a mention on This is Your Life. Read more here.

At The Scottish Storytelling Centre
The music of the pioneering Scottish musician Martyn Bennett flowed with many inspirations, none more so than that of the Scottish Travellers. His final album Grit saw him draw upon the ballads and stories of the Travellers, famously sampling Sheila Stewart’s version of Ewan MacColl’s The Moving On Song to incredible effect. We celebrate Martyn’s love of Traveller culture, whilst also exploring his wide use of world music through the Hindu Kali myths, in an evening with friends of Martyn’s and those still being inspired by his legacy today. With James MacDonald Reid, Gauri Raje, Jess Smith and Gary West.
At the Scottish Storytelling Centre on 30 October 2025. Get tickets here.
