Charlie Mulgrew is confident Brendan Rodgers won’t walk out of Celtic for a second time.

The Northern Irishman caused outrage in February 2019 when he left the Hoops on their way to their third domestic Treble in a row.

That’s why supporters were uneasy when Rodgers returned to Celtic as boss in June 2023, signing a three-year deal and eager to do better in Europe.

He got supporters onside having won a league and Scottish Cup double in 2024, before delivering another two major honours last season.

Rodgers will see his contract expire next summer, and said at the end of the transfer window that he will definitely not leave Celtic before that.

He has, however, been under pressure in recent weeks amid poor form from the Hoops, but Mulgrew thinks Rodgers will stick to his word.

Speaking to talkSPORT this week, former Celtic defender Mulgrew said: “I don’t know (if he will stay or go). Never say never.

“Actually I don’t think Brendan Rodgers will leave and walk away from Celtic. He walked away before and he said he’ll never do it again. I believe him in that.

“I think he would have to be let go by the club or his contract would need to run out.”

What 67 Hail Hail understand about Rodgers contract situation

Rodgers and the Celtic hierarchy have been undergoing talks over a new deal, but 67 Hail Hail understands the two parties are not close to an agreement.

It does seem more likely than not that the 52-year-old will depart Glasgow for a second time when his contract runs out in 2026.

He said he will complete three years and go from there, and hasn’t pledged to stay beyond that.
