Tucked away on the banks of the Exe Estuary is a charming town that looks like it was lifted straight from Europe. The buildings are tall and narrow with curved gables, just like in Holland and there’s no shortage of things to do.
Topsham in Devon is a historic port town. It was once used as a point of transport for the wool of Devon to be taken to the Netherlands.
This shipping culture led to the development of the European architecture that the town is now famous for.
Merchants returning to England often used Dutch bricks as ballast in their ships, inspiring the builders to recreate the distinctive Dutch-style.
Aside from the beautiful buildings there’s plenty to do in Topsham. According to Muddy Stilettos, the town is packed with some of the best shops and eateries in the country, reports the Express.
For a proper posh meal where the food looks as gorgeous as it tastes, try the Michelin-approved Salutation Inn.

If you’re after cake and coffee, Circle is a great option. You could even pick up some local art from the cafe if something takes your fancy.
If the houseplants and local art at Circle aren’t enough for you, Muddy Stilettos also recommends checking out some of the lovely retailers in Topsham.
For children’s clothes, there’s Squid and Kid, and if you prefer your clothes pre-loved, you can’t miss Nest.
If shopping isn’t your cup of tea and you’re more inclined towards outdoor adventures, Topsham has plenty to offer.
The town is surrounded by numerous picturesque walks.
For those seeking a bit of adventure, the Exe Estuary path leading to Exmouth is a great option. It’s a fairly short walk, taking approximately 40 minutes one way.
Upon reaching Exmouth, you can hop on a train back to Topsham — or continue exploring the beauty of Devon.
