Passengers are facing travel chaos after a major airport for British holidaymakers was forced to close following reports of drones in the area. Police are currently investigating at Alicante-Elche Airport in eastern Spain after drones were reportedly spotted near the airport on Monday evening (October 27), resulting in planes being diverted.
Officials have confirmed nine planes have been diverted so far, and no aircraft are currently being allowed to take off or land while the incident is investigated.
The closure has caused significant disruption, with several flights from the UK affected, reports the Mirror.
According to Aena, the agency that operates airports in Spain, Ryanair flights from London, Manchester, Newcastle, Durham, and Frankfurt have all been diverted until 11 pm local time.
A post from Aena on X reads: “Due to the presence of a #drone in the vicinity of the #Alicante-#Elche Miguel Hernández #Airport, flight diversions are occurring.
“We are working together with the Security Forces to normalize operations as soon as possible. Check with your airline for the status of your flight.”
