A Birmingham social club ‘in talks’ with Aldi announced a major change over ‘rising costs’.

Earlier this summer, the supermarket announced it was interested in the site occupied by Weoley Castle Working Men’s Club.

Aldi said the introduction of a new store in the area would ‘improve the immediate local retail offering, creating more competition and improving choice for the local community’.

In August, Northfield MP Lawrence Turner believed members of the social club had agreed to sell the site and were in the process of finding a new location.

Ahead of a potential move, the social club announced on October 28 a major change for members.

Assessing sales, the social club will now shut on Tuesdays which became ‘no longer financially viable’.

On Facebook, Weoley Castle Social Club posted: “Dear members. As many of you are aware, the rising cost of day-to-day operations has prompted a thorough review of our club’s financial sustainability.

“Over the past three months, we’ve carefully assessed sales versus expenditure.

“Unfortunately, Tuesdays have proven to be no longer financially viable.

“After careful consideration, the management committee has made the decision to close the club every Tuesday, effective Tuesday, November 4.
