What’s on at the council this week

Monday, 3rd November, 2025 – no meetings

Tuesday, 4th November, 2025

  • 10.00 am Meeting of Education, Children and Families Committee on 04/11 at 10.00 am – Dean of Guild Court Room – City Chambers. The matter of Holiday Hubs is back on the agenda. These are facilities for children and young people with additional support needs. The campaign group REPAIR has shown us a copy of the deputation which they will present to the meeting. They explain in that the confusion which arose in October around Holiday Hubs resulting in some places remaining unfilled while some parents heard nothing in reply to their applications for a place for their child.
  • There are now new criteria agreed before a child is allocated a place. One of the facilities – the Braidburn Hub – has closed with the council say reduces places by 78 and REPAIR agrees, but say this has decreased provision by 400 places since 2023/24.
  • The council said that a new Development Officer is now in post and they will “learn lessons” from the report about the hubs in summer 2025. But no matter what lessons have been learned each child is now only entitled to three weeks of placement at a holiday hub and not four as they were previously.

Wednesday, 5th November, 2025

  • 10.00 am – 5.00 pm Meeting of Development Management Sub-Committee on 05/11 at 10.00 am – 5.00 pm – Dean of Guild Court Room, City Chambers. The agenda for this meeting includes the usual applications for retrospective consent for change of use to short term let accommodation all of which are recommended for refusal.
  • Edinburgh’s Christmas already has a three year planning permission in place for the various rides and outlets in Princes Street Gardens which are already being erected, but they have made two new applications – one for West Princes Street Gardens is recommended for approval, but the other for additional huts – a Dutch-inspired tent and 20 new market stalls – in the gardens is recommended for refusal. The reason given is that these extra units would have an adverse impact on the gardens. Details of the huts to be used are here.

Alfred Buckham

At the Portrait gallery on York Place take to the skies and see the world from above the clouds through the work of Alfred Buckham: Daredevil Photographer. From 18 October 2025 – 19 April 2026, meet the man behind some of the most iconic aerial photographs ever taken, marvel at the death-defying lengths he took to capture the perfect image and explore how his innovative techniques in the darkroom paved the way for modern technologies such as Photoshop and AI. Free to visit at the National Galleries Scotland: Portrait, this will be the first major exhibition dedicated to Alfred Buckham and can only be seen in Scotland.

This exhibition will bring together over 100 photographs and objects including popular works from the Scottish national collection, alongside extensive archival material generously loaned by Alfred Buckham’s grandsons, Richard and John Buckham. Thanks to the support of the Buckham family, personal objects including letters, photographs and even the passport Alfred Buckham used will be put on public display for the first time.

Louise Pearson, curator of photography at the National Galleries of Scotland says: “Alfred Buckham’s eye-catching photograph of Edinburgh is one of the most popular artworks in the National Galleries of Scotland collection. This enthralling image becomes even more intriguing when you learn that it is a darkroom jigsaw – a composite photograph made through a combination of technical skill and creative vision. Alfred Buckham: Daredevil Photographer tells the remarkable story of this maverick of early aviation whose adventures took him from aerial reconnaissance photographer to intrepid explorer via numerous loop the loops.”
