Alex Cochrane has hailed Birmingham City’s mentality after the Blues halted high-flying Millwall’s rapid progress in the Championship with a thumping 4-0 win at St Andrews on Tuesday evening.
The South East London outfit could have gone second in the table had results gone their way, but instead they were met by a Blues side who had no intention of allowing their visitors’ unbeaten away record to stay intact.
First-half goals from Paik Seung-ho and Demarai Gray were further boosted by second-half strikes from Cochrane and Jay Stansfield as Chris Davies’ side recorded back-to-back 4-0 home wins that put them back in promotion conversation and the Blues’ left-back admitted that his gaffer had made it clear what was expected of his players prior to kick-off.
Speaking to BBC Radio WM, Cochrane said: “The manager spoke about it. The mentality had to be right.
“We had to have the right intensity, have the desire to get forward into the box, to create chances and we were clinical. To score four goals again at home – it’s a good night.
“It’s enjoyable. Everybody wants the ball and is trying things. We won’t get complacent, we still need to do the right stuff because we know how good we are when we get it right and the last two games we’ve shown that.”
The 25-year-old’s goal, four minutes after the interval, was one to savour in particular. After Millwall headed clear a cross into the box, Chochrane met the ball on the edge of the ‘D’ before unleashing a stunning left-footed volley that beat goalkeeper Max Crocombe with sheer power and execution.
“It’s nice to contribute and to get a clean sheet is important and obviousy it’s nice to score a goal,” he added.
“I caught it sweetly and it was nice to see it go in the back of the net. It was a nice feeling to get my first goal at St Andrew’s.”
The Blues moved up to ninth in the table with the win and now head to third-place Middlesbrough on Saturday with a chance to move into the promotion places on offer as Davies finally appears to have got his side’s season back on track.
