Scunthorpe United have confirmed that Jonathan Gjoshe, their player who was among those injured in the Huntingdon train attack, has undergone surgery. The 22-year-old defender is now “at home resting and is expected to make a full recovery.”

He was among 11 people injured in the horror attack and was slashed across the bicep, having been on the 6.25pm service which was heading from Doncaster to London King’s Cross. Gjoshe was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge after the nine-carriage train was diverted to Huntingdon shortly after 7.30pm on Saturday.

National League outfit Scunthorpe confirmed on Monday that their player was among those injured and stated that he had “sustained non life-threatening injuries”. He also plays for North Lincolnshire side Bottesford Town under the dual-registration rules in Non-League football and played for them on Saturday before the incident.

The Iron have since confirmed that Gjoshe is now on the road to recovery, while the player has also spoken out. Scunthorpe said in a statement: “Following surgery on Tuesday on the wound sustained on his arm, the club can confirm that Jonathan is now at home resting, and is expected to make a full recovery.

“Jonathan has sent a message to tag along with this statement: ‘I would like to thank the staff the players and everyone who sent their well wishes, and to all the fans and everybody who has contributed towards the fundraising. I really appreciate everything. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.’

“We would ask that Jonathan and his family’s privacy is respected at this time, and as a club we will make no further comment.

“We continue to send our best wishes to Jonathan and all victims of the attack on Saturday evening.”

Fan website Iron-Bru.co.uk set up the fundraiser, which had gathered £3,500 earlier this week, and all donations will “go towards any adjustments that need to be made in the form of care, transport costs and loss of earnings while Jonathan recovers from his injuries.”

Organiser Matt Ellis said the initial target had been £2,000, which was reached in less than 24 hours after football supporters from around the country pitched into help.

The Scunthorpe boss Andy Butler described it as “an awful thing to happen”. He said: “It hits close to home it really does. The club will back him every step of the way in terms of recovery.”

Anthony Williams, 32, appeared at Peterborough magistrates court charged with 10 counts of attempted murder on Monday. He is also charged with having a kitchen knife and actual bodily harm on a police officer following his arrest.

He is also accused of attempting to murder a 17-year-old boy at a DLR in London earlier on Saturday.

Williams is due to appear before Cambridge Crown Court on December 1.
