A man has been arrested after breaking into a home and assaulting a resident – later going on to hit a police officer’s head against a wall.

It happened on Lenaghan Crescent in south Belfast shortly after 4am on Friday.

He climbed in to the house through an upstairs window.

The male resident assaulted required hospital treatment for his injury.

Detective Inspector Keon said: “The suspect, aged in his 20s, then barricaded himself in a room before being arrested by police on suspicion of burglary and common assault.

“He was also arrested on suspicion of assault on police, after he hit a police officer’s head against a wall. He remains in custody at this time, assisting with enquiries.

“Our investigation is ongoing, and I would appeal to anyone who may have information, including CCTV or other video footage, to contact police on 101 quoting reference 158 7/11/25.”
