A major street in Glasgow city centre has been forced to close this evening following a sinkhole “emergency”.

The sinkhole was discovered on Elmbank Street, close to the junction with St Vincent Street, on Friday, November 7. The street is located near to Charing Cross train station, King’s Theatre, and is just off busy Sauchiehall Street.

“Emergency” repairs are underway after the hole in the ground appeared. Scottish Water confirmed it is currently carrying out urgent repairs. It is believed that a damaged sewer is at the centre of the crisis work.

The area has been being fenced off and made safe while preparations are made to carry out a survey of the sewer.

Local businesses are still open, but drivers are being urged to follow diversions, according to Glasgow Live.

Photos taken at the scene show the caved in part of the ground, which is caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer. Traffic cones surround the affected area, which is also taped off to drivers and passers-by.

Those on the roads should also give themselves a bit more time for their journeys, as travel in and out of this part of the city centre could be impeded. Scottish Water said it doesn’t know how long the improvements will take.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “Unfortunately a full road closure is required on safety grounds.

“At this stage we can’t say how long any repair will take but we will do all that we can to complete all necessary work as quickly as possible.

“There will inevitably be some disruption, but we would like to thank anyone affected for their patience and understanding.”
