Sheffield Wednesday must request an extension to Harry Amass’ loan from Manchester United if they wish to keep him beyond January, reports The Manchester Evening News.
Sheffield Wednesday are optimistic that a brighter future awaits following the departure of former owner Dejphon Chansiri. The Thai businessman’s exit, brought about by administration, has paved the way for the club to seek new ownership and stability.
In the meantime, staff at Hillsborough are already planning ahead for the January transfer window. While there is hope of securing a few free agents before then, the Owls will also be looking to make low-cost additions once the market reopens in winter.

With January just a couple of months away, Sheffield Wednesday will now be looking at some additions. However, they could potentially lose one of their two summer signings.
According to The Manchester Evening News, Harry Amass could leave the club in January. Although the agreement is set up for the entire campaign, it technically expires on January 5.
This means Sheffield Wednesday must request to extend the loan if they wish to keep him for the season. If they do so, United will then choose whether to accept or reject the request.

Amass has made 10 starts in the Championship since joining Sheffield Wednesday and is said to be thoroughly enjoying life at Hillsborough. The expectation is that his loan will run for the full campaign.

The agreement was structured as an alternative to inserting a break clause, a feature Manchester United often include in their loan deals. This setup suited Wednesday well, given their current financial uncertainty under former owner Dejphon Chansiri.
United are covering the costs of Amass’ loan to ensure he gains regular game time. However, this does leave open the possibility of another Championship club making an offer to take over the arrangement and cover the expenses themselves.
That said, playing time remains the top priority in any decision regarding Amass’ future. United are satisfied with his development at Wednesday and the valuable experience he’s gaining through consistent minutes.
Sheffield Wednesday’s January plans
The Owls have an interesting January ahead of them, and any dealings will depend on whether a new owner has been found for the club. It is very unlikely that SWFC will spend big in any scenario, with most deals likely being loan signings or free transfers.
Former Leeds United favourite Liam Cooper has been linked with a move to Sheffield Wednesday already. Another player SWFC are interested in is Oxford United’s Tyler Goodrham.

How Sheffield Wednesday approach this window may depend on how many points they pick up from now until January. If there is half a chance they could pull themselves out of the drop zone, January could be very interesting for SWFC.
