DOZENS of police officers have swarmed a street in Glasgow city centre after a major incident this evening.

Emergency services raced to Buchanan Street after the alarm was raised shortly before 7pm.

Cops appear to be focusing on a local Sainsbury’s store, with an incident believed to have broken out just outside the shop.

It’s understood cops were called to the scene after a woman was allegedly assaulted outside the store, before staff rushed to her aid.

Witnesses reported seeing one woman injured, and paramedics were assisting her at the scene.

It’s not clear what sparked the alleged incident.

However, witnesses could see large splashes of liquid on the ground, while police bagged up items nearby.

A witness told The Scottish Sun: “There was a bit of a rammy near the shop.

“It ended up getting worse, and they ended up near the Buchanan Galleries.

“One woman then ran into the Sainsbury’s.”

Cops were spotted collecting rolls of paper and other items into large plastic bags before loading them into a police car.

Another cop was seen bringing a box and a first aid bag out of the shop as concerned locals lined the street.

Shop staff have been seen continuing to work in the background as police handle the incident.

Half a dozen police cars are currently parked on the busy street in the heart of the city centre.

Several ambulances and paramedics were also seen on the street with their blue emergency lights flashing.

Police locked down the area surrounding the shop with blue tape blocking access to the public.

Several officers have been seen guarding the area on foot as they dealt with the incident.

The glass entrance to the store is also smashed, with shards of broken glass scattered along the ground.

Blue tape has been erected along the whole north side of the street and around the Sainsbury’s store.

Privacy screens have been put up inside the store and in front of the shop’s entrance.

Several bottles of water were also seen scattered around the entrance of the shop beside large puddles of water on the shop floor.

There also appears to be splashes of liquid in the ground further up the street.

Members of the public have been directed to a nearby shop on Sauchiehall Street after asking officers if they could get into the Buchanan Street Sainsbury’s.

Police Scotland and the Scottish Ambulance Service have been contacted for comment.
