Barry McEwan was buzzing after winning the Iain Reid Memorial Match over two days this weekend in Fife.

The self-employed carpet fitter from Port Seton pocketed £500 after a tough weekend of fishing on beaches at Kirkcaldy and Leven.

McEwan, a Scotland international, who recently competed in the world shore angling championships in Portugal, beat 57 other anglers, including several Scotland team-mates to take the award.

He is a regular angler in the Bass Rock Shore Angling Club’s winter and summer league matches and McEwan won Zone Three on Kirkcaldy beach on Day One with six fish for 172cms.

He edged Colin Bell who had four fish for 114cm and Steve Potts from Tyneside who landed three fish for 97cm.

Second was Falkirk-based Ian Campbell, also a Scotland international and retail manager of the Edinburgh Angling Centre. He had two fish for 54cm at Kirkcaldy but came good on Day Two and took home £300.

Third was Kirkcaldy-based angler Chris Horn, also a Scotland angler, who won £200 after hooking into four fish on the first day for 127cm and having a second second session.

The longest flat fish landed during the popular annual event was a 37cm flounder. Andy Padsfield was the angler and it was landed at Kirkcaldy.

The junior winner was George Fraser who beat a number of senior anglers during the event over four hours each day.

Chris Horn, one of the organisers, said it had been a hard weekend of fishing. He added: “Leven would normally have produced much more in those conditions but somebody forgot to tell the fish.”
