“It is all part of a carefully considered plan to bring George onto the public stage in a way that the family is comfortable with,” says a royal insider. “As second in line to the throne, George needs to understand the importance of occasions like this. It was deemed appropriate and significant for him to be there, particularly in his father’s absence. Both William and Catherine felt this was the right moment for George to be there.”

Prince George’s introduction to the public has been gradual. After being sheltered from the spotlight during his early childhood, the public has seen more of the shy prince in recent years. In 2022, George and his sister Princess Charlotte attended the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, and in May 2023, all three of William and Kate’s children attended the coronation of their grandfather, King Charles III.

Prince George has appeared on the famous Buckingham Palace balcony from a young age, and has also attended Jubilee celebrations and the annual Trooping the Colour. He was last seen in July attending the Wimbledon Men’s Finals with his parents.

On Saturday evening, Prince George was seated in the royal box alongside King Charles, Queen Camilla, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester, and Richard, Duke of Gloucester.
