Armistice Day

Edinburgh Trams is set to commemorate Armistice Day on Tuesday to pay tribute to those who fell in World War I, World War II, and in conflicts in recent years.

To remember the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces, Edinburgh Trams will be offering free tram travel for veterans and serving members of the Army, Navy, and Air Force on both Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. They will be able to take up this offer by simply showing their military ID or wearing their uniform on each day.

Leading up to the day of remembrance and reflection, members from Poppy Scotland will be located at our Haymarket tram stop selling poppies, should you wish to purchase one. We’ll also have poppies on display in tram windows.

As a further mark of respect, where safe to do so, tram services will stop at 11am to observe a two-minute silence on both days.

Lea Harrison, Edinburgh Trams Managing Director, said: “Each year I am proud to show our support at Edinburgh Trams on both Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

“As a former veteran myself, and a number of our colleagues being former service men and women, we are passionate about paying tribute to all of those who have paid the ultimate price throughout the years while serving our country.”

The tram operator will also be donating £500 to the Scottish Poppy Appeal to show their support.

On Armistice Day (Tuesday 11 November), Lothian services will also pause where safe to do so for two minutes at 11.00am to allow colleagues and customers to pay tribute to all lives lost in the world wars and subsequent conflicts since then.

On Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, colleagues who have military backgrounds are invited to wear their veterans’ ties as a mark of respect.

Road closures may be in effect in some locations across our network to allow various Remembrance Services to take place, so we recommend checking our Service Updates page before travelling.

MSP raises new centre for Sustainable Brewing and Distilling

Gordon Macdonald MSP for Pentlands has raised the matter of the new centre for Sustainable Brewing and Distilling and this will be debated at The Scottish Parliament on Wednesday.

The Business Motion states: “That the Parliament welcomes the commitment from Heriot-Watt University, in Edinburgh, on the economic importance of brewing and distilling in Scotland by seeking to raise £35 million to build a new Centre for Sustainable Brewing and Distilling (CSBD); understands the centre will be a new state-of-the-art version of the current International Centre for Brewing and Distilling (ICBD), which it understands is a world leading educational establishment delivering undergraduate and graduate courses; notes that the CSBD will embrace the latest green technologies and sustainable practices, ensuring that the university continues to lead the world in securing a future for both industries; recognises what it sees as the legacy and impact of Heriot-Watt University on the industries of brewing and distilling for more than 120 years, establishing both industries as key economic drivers, and commends what it considers to be the first-class teaching, innovation and sustainable methods of working at the ICBD, which has contributed to the success of brewing and distilling not only in Scotland but across the continents of Europe, the Americas and Asia.”

Watch online here from 2pm. The motion will be debated at 5pm.
